The Madison Grandfather Clock: Is It Really A Grandfather?
Have you ever thought about buying a grandfather clock? Do you even know why they call them “grandfather” clocks? Me neither, at least I didn’t before I looked it up. So this is the story:
Back some time in the 1800s or so there were these two brothers who owned a hotel. They had one of these clocks and it kept perfeclty good time right up until one of the Jenkins brothers died. After brother number one passed, the clock was always having problems and struggled with the time until the second brother passed away at which point the clock stopped entirely.
Some time later a songwriter stopped by the hotel and heard the story. When he went home to America he wrote a song about his grandfather’s clock and it became an instant hit and that’s why people call them “Grandfather” clocks now.
Of course there are different varieties of grandfather clocks. Two main varieties standout when you talk about grandfather clocks, first the Madison grandfather clock and then the Franklin. The names address the different cabinet designs, both are nice looking clocks though I prefer the Madison grandfather clock to the Franklin.
